Donald Schaffer Jr. –2020 PSSA Trapshooter of the Year
Donald Schaffer Jr. of Newtown, Pennsylvania has achieved the honor of being named the PSSA 2020 Trapshooter of the Year based upon his impressive performance during the 2019 ATA shooting season.
Don registered a total of 21,200 targets in 2019. This total included 7,500 singles (.9843), 7,100 handicap (.9073) and 6,600 doubles (.9542). Don’s 2019 singles and doubles averages were his career best. He competed in Arizona, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. Among his accomplishments were four perfect 200 straights in singles, nine more perfect hundreds in singles and one perfect 100 from the 27 yard line in handicap. Don also registered eight (99 x 100) scores in doubles events while managing to compile 1,424 ATA All American points resulting in his selection as a 2020 first team ATA All- American. This was Don’s fifth appointment to the ATA All American team, his third as a first team member. His composite average of .9486 resulted in a 2020 PSSA All State first team recognition. Don has been selected as a PSSA All State Team member thirteen times in his shooting career.
In 2019, Don captured High Over-All trophies at the Dixie Grand and Connecticut State Shoot. He also won High All Around honors at the Northeast Grand, Dixie Grand and the Silver Dollar Open. He tallied 280 All American points at the Autumn Grand and 268 points at the Dixie Grand. Other competitions resulting in points were the Southern Grand (175), the Grand American (170), the Northeast Grand (164), the New York State Shoot (136), the PA State Shoot (119) and the Preliminary Grand American (112). His collection of 1,424 All American points were secured while competing against the top competition in the sport.
In 2019 competitions, Don captured over sixty-five event trophies. Nine of these trophies were won at Elysburg PSSA sponsored events. His most memorable wins were a perfect hundred from the 27 yard line at the Autumn Grand in Tucson, duplicating this feat at the same shoot and venue where he completed his ATA Grand Slam in 2018. Don managed to capture eight major event championships including three of the five major events at both the Silver Dollar Open (Doubles, Singles, High All Around) and the Dixie Grand (Handicap, High All Around and High Over-All). He broke perfect 200 straights in Singles events in Elysburg (Keystone Open and PA Grand), the Silver Dollar Open Singles Championship and at the Grand American Winchester Class Singles events.
Don considers the PSSA Home Grounds in Elysburg his “home” club and the Silver Dollar Shooting Club in Odessa, Florida as a “home away from home”. His favorite Satellite Grand location is the Tucson Trap and Skeet Club in Arizona. Don began his ATA career as a junior shooter in 1985. After a sixteen year period of limited participation, he returned to the sport and serious competition in 2008. Since returning, he has been named a PSSA All-State Team member ten times.
Donald Schaffer Jr. is Owner and President of Newtown Heating and Air Conditioning, Inc. His business serves the needs of customers in Bucks and Montgomery counties in Southeastern Pennsylvania and Mercer County in New Jersey. Don’s stellar accomplishments during the 2019 ATA target year have resulted in the honor of being named the PSSA’s “2020 Trapshooter of the Year”.
